TVR AJP V8 (Speed Eight)
The AJP V8 is TVR’s own V8 engine, designed in-house in the mid-1990s. The name comes from the designers — Al Melling, John Ravenscroft, Peter Wheeler.
Spec at a glance

Known weak spots
Section titled “Known weak spots”- Cylinder head porosity — early heads have been reported as porous. Coolant in the oil after a hot run is the typical symptom.
- Followers and cam wear — service history really matters.
- Bespoke electronics — the original ECU (Lucas-developed for TVR) is no longer supported. Most current owners are running either a reflashed original ECU, an emulator board, or a modern aftermarket ECU (MBE / TunerStudio).
Rebuild parts — Rover V8 compatibility
Section titled “Rebuild parts — Rover V8 compatibility”Some AJP V8 internals share dimensions with the Rover V8 (as used in Land Rover Discovery 1/2, Defender 90, Range Rover P38). This matters because Rover V8 service parts are still widely stocked and cheap, whereas AJP V8-specific parts are increasingly hard to source.
Main bearings — Land Rover STC 4299

- Kit contents: upper and lower shells for all main journals
Check the bearing crush and journal sizes with a plastigauge before final assembly — sharing a dimensional standard with the Rover V8 does not remove the need to measure.
